India to the Rescue: 1200 Tons of Onions for Mauritius

Last Wednesday, the Indian government granted permission to the National Cooperative Exports Ltd (NCEL) to send large quantities of onions to three countries facing onion crises, namely Bhutan, Bahrain, and Mauritius.

Bhutan will receive 550 tonnes, Bahrain 3,000 tonnes, and Mauritius 1,200 tonnes.

These are exceptions granted by the Indian government as India has banned onion exports since December 8th last year until March 31st of this year in order to supply the local market and control prices.

Last week, India allowed the export of 64,400 tonnes of onions to the United Arab Emirates and Bangladesh.

These permissions were granted following official requests from the respective countries.

Mauritius has been facing a shortage of onions in its local market since the beginning of the year.

This is attributed to several factors that the government has not been able to resolve despite several initiatives.

It is worth noting that NCEL is a cooperative society of the Indian government.
