Critical Shortage of Nurses in Public Healthcare Sparks Concerns

A critical shortage of nurses in public healthcare has become a pressing concern, exacerbated by factors like emigration and new professional development requirements.

The Ministry of Health acknowledges recruitment difficulties due to retirements and deaths, while unions affirm the scarcity.

Bholanath Jeewuth, Nurses’ Union Secretary, notes a shortfall during overtime shifts.

Rashid Goolamally, President of the Senior Nursing Staff Association, highlights a significant wage gap between public and private sector nurses.

Additionally, staff burnout is prevalent, with reports of high stress levels. The introduction of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) requirements adds strain, with challenges in accessing courses.

Figures show 4,400 nurses compared to 3,800 doctors in 2022, underscoring the need for increased nursing staff.
