Controversy: Rodrigues Gives Contract to Israeli Company Accused of Discrimination
The “unprecedented” and “rapid” increase in the number of Israeli settlements in Palestine is compounding the water crisis.

In a development that has shocked many, the Rodrigues Regional Assembly has reportedly granted a consultancy contract to Mekorot Development and Enterprise Ltd. to review water supply issues.

However, the controversy stems from the fact that this Israeli company is accused of discriminatory practices against Palestinians on the very same water supply matter.

The apartheid-like policy denies significant portions of the Palestinian population access to clean drinking water.

“By illegally appropriating large water quantities from Palestinians, Mekorot’s actions amount to the war crime of pillage,” international NGOs have claimed.

The “unprecedented” and “rapid” increase in the number of Israeli settlements in Palestine is compounding the water crisis.

The agricultural sector in particular suffers greatly from the repercussions of these infringements, posing serious threats to food security in Palestine.

Many in Rodrigues are now questioning whether the Assembly conducted a proper bidding process before approving a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Israelis.

A social media campaign has emerged, calling for a boycott of Mekorot in solidarity with the Palestinians.
