Mauritius Police issue one traffic contravention every 3 minutes

Mauritian police have issued a staggering 3,638 tickets in one week for  various traffic violations. This represents over 20 contraventions issued every hour, a contravention every 3 minutes.

According to latest figures released by the Mauritius Police Force, some 3,056 offenders received a “Fixed Penalty” from April 5 to 11, while 491 other motorists were fined for speeding.

Out of the 29,506 vehicles checked during the week, 59 drivers were tested positive for alcohol and 24 others were tested positive for drugs. Some 30 vehicles were wheel clamped for illegal parking.

The fines vary from Rs1,000 to Rs10,000.

Since the beginning of the month, a total of 7,036 motorists were booked, of whom 935 were for speeding.
