Recount of votes for Constituency No.19 to be held on Feb1

The recount of the 2019 General Elections votes for Constituency No. 19 (Stanley/ Rose-Hill) will take place on Tuesday February 1, at the GMD Atchia State College in Port-Louis.

L’Express newspaper reported that the exercise will be led by the Acting Master and Registrar, Wendy Rangan, in the presence of all parties concerned, the Electoral Commission and defeated MMM candidate Jenny Adebiro.

The recount of ballots was ordered by the Supreme Court Judges Denis Mootoo and Aruna Devi Narain, on January 21 following an electoral petition filed by Adebiro,

The latter’s claim for discrepancies in the results took a new twist after the Electoral Commission admitted, two years later, that it had also noted inconsistencies in the numbers.

On January 21, Judges Denis Mootoo and Aruna Devi Narain ruled that the recount of votes was required.

Jenny Adebiro had lost to ex-Deputy Prime Minister Ivan Collendavelloo by 92 votes.
