Cops dishing out fines to those not wearing masks

Urging local residents to wear face masks as protection from COVID-19, the Mauritian Police has stepped up action against those flouting the sanitary rules.

Over the last week, from October 27 to November 2, the police have caught 919 people for not wearing face masks.

Following the COVID-19 outbreak in March last year, the local authorities had made it mandatory to wear a face mask while moving around in public places.

With the disturbing rise of scores of deaths officially recorded in less than a month, authorities and the Mauritian Police have kicked off a strict drive to catch offenders.

Not wearing a mask is equivalent to a Fixed Penalty of Rs 2,000.
