Police Investigate after 2 Workers Found Dead at Pereybère
Construction site in Pereybère has become the focus of a grim inquiry following the discovery of two masons at a villa site on Saturday, 25 April. Grand-Baie Police are currently prioritizing a suspected drug overdose as the most likely cause behind the double fatality.
The victims, aged 31 and 32, were discovered in a bathroom at the site where they had both been working and residing.
Emergency medical services (SAMU) attended the scene, where a doctor confirmed both men had passed away.
The Discovery
The grim find was made on Saturday morning by the property owner, a local barrister.
After noticing the workers were missing from CCTV feeds and failing to reach them via telephone, he visited the site to investigate.
Upon arrival, police discovered the two bodies in the bathroom, one lying across the other. Two syringes were found in close proximity to the deceased.
Forensic teams have since seized the syringes and a metal box found within the villa for further analysis.
Post-Mortem Results
Autopsies conducted by Dr Sudesh Kumar Gungadin, Chief Police Medical Officer, concluded that the cause of death for both men was pulmonary oedema.
The victims hailed from Petite-Rivière and Richelieu. Following the forensic examinations, their bodies were released to their respective families on Saturday for funeral arrangements.
Ongoing Investigation
The property owner informed authorities that he did not know the men personally, as he dealt exclusively with their employer, a construction contractor.
The masons had been tasked with building a swimming pool and were staying on-site temporarily.
Detectives have recorded statements from the victims’ family members as they continue to piece together the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy. The investigation remains active.
