New Legal Measures Targeted at Workplace Violence, Labour Minister Announces

Legal sanctions and formal prosecutions for workplace violence are currently being evaluated by the Ministry of Labour in a direct collaboration with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The initiative was confirmed by Labour Minister Reza Uteem on Thursday, 30 April, during a symposium dedicated to mental health in the professional environment.

The announcement signals a shift toward stricter accountability for violence occurring within the workplace.

Global Health Crisis

Speaking at a workshop held ahead of Labour Day celebrations on 1 May, Minister Uteem highlighted the gravity of occupational health challenges.

He cited global figures indicating that approximately 840,000 workers die annually due to stress-related illnesses and mental health disorders.

Productivity and Wellbeing

The Minister emphasised that psychological wellbeing is not merely a personal matter but a critical factor in national commerce.

According to Reza Uteem, the mental health of employees is inextricably linked to:

  • Corporate Performance: Healthy environments foster better outcomes.
  • Business Productivity: Mental distress serves as a direct barrier to efficient output.

The ongoing collaboration with the DPP aims to ensure that future instances of workplace violence do not go unpunished, reinforcing the government’s commitment to employee protection and mental health awareness.
