Moka Police Arrest 3 Suspects following Rs 1.04 Million Jewellery Heist

Three suspects have been arrested by police in Mauritius following the high-value theft of gold jewellery and cash totaling Rs 1.04 million from a home in Moka.

The Moka Criminal Investigation Division (CID) launched a swift probe and detained three individuals on the exact same day the crime was officially reported.

Among those in custody are a local cleaner and her husband, alongside a commercial jeweller based in the nearby tech hub of Ébène.

Investigators targeted the household’s cleaner after the victim, a female shopkeeper residing in Gentilly Estate, Moka, discovered the massive shortfall.

The shopkeeper alerted authorities after realizing that a stash of gold jewellery and Rs 40,000 in cash had vanished from her property.

Detectives estimate the theft took place over a three-day window between 24 May and 27 May, while the homeowner was away.

Because forensic teams found absolutely no signs of forced entry at the residence, suspicion rapidly shifted toward the domestic worker who had legitimate access to the property.

The primary suspects have been identified as 35-year-old Marie Isabelle Marjolaine Castel and her husband, Jean Yves Castel, aged 48.

During police interrogations, the couple fully confessed to the crime and have since been remanded in custody.

The third suspect, 36-year-old jeweller Mohammad Al-Aswad Beesassy, is currently being held at the detention centre in the centre of Moka.

Detectives strongly suspect the couple attempted to sell the stolen gold directly to the jeweller, or that there was an active plot to melt down the luxury items to erase any traceable evidence.

The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to secure the evidence.
