Minister Confirms 3 Allegations of Abuse during Ongoing Twaha Academy Inquiry
The Minister of Gender Equality has confirmed that more students are coming forward with allegations of physical abuse at the Twaha Academy, as the police search for the school’s principal who is believed to have fled the country.
Minister Arianne Navarre-Marie revealed that two children recently reported to the Family Protection Unit, providing authorities with the names of further pupils allegedly victimised at the institution.
A third student sought assistance at the Family Support Service in Flacq on Tuesday, 7 April, reporting physical abuse.
The Minister clarified that the current claims involve physical mistreatment, stating there is “nothing sexual” regarding the latest reports.
Principal remains at large
The boarding school, located in Pont Lardier, has been under intense scrutiny since late March following serious allegations against its principal, Azhar Peerbocus.
The investigation was initially triggered by a Grade 9 student who accused Peerbocus of inappropriate behaviour.
This led to his immediate dismissal on Monday, 30 March. However, it is understood that Peerbocus has since left the jurisdiction, with reports suggesting he has travelled to South Africa.
Call for witnesses
The investigation is currently being spearheaded by the Family Protection Unit of the Eastern Division.
Minister Navarre-Marie has issued a direct appeal to the community, urging parents and students to come forward.
“I invite the parents and children concerned to come forward and denounce any type of abuse,” the Minister stated.
The authorities are continuing their enquiries into the scale of the alleged mistreatment at the academy.
