Kenyan President Hosts Mauritian PM to Bolster Economic and Security Ties
NAIROBI – President William Ruto of Kenya received Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam at State House on Wednesday, 13 May, to formalise a strategic deepening of bilateral relations during the Africa Forward Summit.
The high-level meeting focused on a robust expansion of economic ties, with both leaders committing to increased trade and investment across multiple sectors.
Central to the discussions was the enhancement of air connectivity between the two nations, viewed as a primary catalyst for regional integration.
Regional Security and Judicial Support
Beyond economics, the leaders prioritised maritime security within the Indian Ocean. Formal talks addressed collaborative efforts to combat piracy and illicit trafficking, reinforcing the stability of regional trade routes.
During the exchange, President Ruto formally requested Mauritius’s backing for Justice Njoki Ndung’u.
The Kenyan Supreme Court judge is currently a candidate for a judicial seat at the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Strategic Diplomatic Engagements
The visit coincided with the “Africa Forward” Africa-France Summit, held in Nairobi on 11 and 12 May.
The event drew approximately thirty African heads of state and government to the Kenyan capital.
On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Ramgoolam also held a private meeting with Jean-Jacques Bouya, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of the Congo.
Their dialogue focused on technical cooperation in three critical infrastructure areas:
- Port operations
- Maritime transport
- The hydrocarbon sector
The series of meetings underscores a concerted effort by Mauritius to strengthen its diplomatic and industrial footprint across the African continent.
