Health Officials Raise Alarm As Over 50 Chikungunya Cases Recorded In 24 Hours

Health officials have voiced “very serious concerns” as more than 50 new cases of Chikungunya were recorded in a single 24-hour period on Thursday, 26 March.

The surge, confirmed by Acting Director of Health Services, Dr Fazil Khodabaccus, marks a significant escalation in the ongoing outbreak.

Since the beginning of the year, the country has recorded a total of 682 cases.

Regional Hotspots

The outbreak remains concentrated in specific urban clusters. Authorities have identified the following areas as the primary hotspots:

  • Stanley
  • Camp-Levieux
  • Plaisance, Rose-Hill

Environmental Factors

Medical experts attributed the rapid spread to a volatile mix of heavy rainfall and intense heat.

These conditions have created a fertile breeding ground for mosquitoes, the primary vectors responsible for transmitting the virus.

Health authorities remain on high alert as they continue to monitor the situation across the country.
