Environmental Crisis: Mauritius Loses 4 Hectares of Forest in a Year
The recently published Environment Statistics for 2021 and 2022 reveal that the forest area in Mauritius has decreased by 4 hectares, declining from 47,006 hectares in 2021 to 47,002 hectares in 2022.
Additionally, 34 Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) permits were granted in 2022.
The report also highlights changes in agricultural production, with a decrease in sugarcane cultivation and an increase in green tea production.
Moreover, fertiliser imports reduced by 25.2%, while pesticide imports saw a rise of 31.8%.
The temperature in 2022 remained mostly below long-term averages, with the highest temperature reaching 35.7°C and the lowest being 9.1°C.
The report also provides insights into precipitation patterns, waste disposal at Mare Chicose, and the issuance of EIA and Preliminary Environmental Report (PER) licenses.
