Radiation services at Victoria Hospital have been halted with immediate effect following a formal prohibition order issued by the national nuclear regulator.

The Radiation Safety and Nuclear Security Authority (RSNSA) enforced the closure on 5 May 2026, citing significant risks to both the public and the environment.

Under the emergency directive, all radiation-related activities at the hospital’s radiotherapy department must remain suspended until further notice.

Regulatory Breaches

The intervention was triggered by the Ministry of Health and Wellness’s failure to implement adequate protection measures.

According to the RSNSA, the Ministry failed to guarantee optimal safety levels during medical exposures, marking a direct violation of Section 30(a) of the Radiation Safety and Nuclear Security Act.

The authority stated that the current practices at the Candos-based facility posed an unacceptable threat, leading to the invocation of Section 23(4) of the Act to force the immediate cessation of services.

Indefinite Suspension

In an official statement, the RSNSA confirmed that the prohibition order would remain in force until the Ministry provides evidence that all identified safety failings have been rectified.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness has not yet detailed how it plans to address the compliance issues or what arrangements will be made for patients whose treatments have been interrupted by the sudden closure.
