Panic in Plaine-Verte as Major Fire Ravages Local Depot for 2nd Time
A massive blaze tore through the Nanhuck depot in Plaine-Verte on Wednesday afternoon, 6 May, sparking widespread panic in the neighborhood as the building was engulfed for the second time in its history.
Emergency services were alerted at 1:25 pm after thick black smoke began billowing over the district and the main road.
The Mauritius Fire & Rescue Service dispatched teams from Port-Louis and Coromandel to battle the inferno, which consumed a variety of flammable liquids, foodstuffs, and beverages stored inside the corrugated iron structure.
Emergency Response and Evacuation
As the fire spread rapidly through the interior, occupants scrambled to evacuate barrels containing highly combustible materials.
Witnesses described a scene of total confusion, with firefighters forced to scale a van to gain a better vantage point to combat the flames.
The fire was successfully brought under control by 2:33 pm. While the destruction of stock was significant, officials confirmed there were no fatalities.
One woman, the mother of the depot manager, was inside the building when the fire broke out.
She was treated for smoke inhalation and evacuated to a private clinic, where her condition is reported as stable.
Investigation Underway
The incident has left locals shaken and uncertain. One regular at the depot expressed the community’s distress, noting that the business had now been devastated by fire twice. “We don’t know what to do,” they remarked.
Plaine-Verte police have launched a formal inquiry into the matter. Investigators from the Fire Investigation Unit were deployed to the scene following the damping-down operation to determine the exact cause of the blaze.
