Handheld Phone Penalties Double from 3 to 6 Points on 10 June
Drivers caught using a handheld mobile phone or microphone while behind the wheel will face significantly tougher penalties, under strict new road safety regulations.
Starting Wednesday, 10 June 2026, the number of penalty points issued for the offence will nearly double.
Drivers found using a handheld handset or microphone will see the penalty increase from the current 3 to 6 points to a much harsher bracket of 5 to 10 points.
The Cabinet took note of the legal changes on Friday following the promulgation of the Road Traffic (Amendment of Schedule) (No. 2) Regulations 2026.
The statutory instrument specifically targets the use of handheld communication devices to crack down on distracted driving.
Government officials confirmed the measures are part of an ongoing, broader effort to reinforce road safety across the network and actively discourage high-risk behaviour behind the wheel.
The tougher points system will apply to any motorist caught operating a handheld phone or microphone while driving once the law officially takes effect on 10 June.
