Mauritius and Rodrigues Under Heavy Rain Watch Until 4 PM Friday
A heavy rain watch is in effect for Mauritius and Rodrigues after a weather warning was issued this Thursday, 23 April, by the Vacoas Meteorological Station.
The alert, which commenced at 4:00 pm today, Thursday 23 April, is set to remain in place until at least 4:00 pm tomorrow, Friday 24 April.
Forecasters have identified active cloud formations linked to an instability zone approaching from the east, which are expected to trigger moderate to locally heavy downpours and thunderstorms across the islands.
Flood Risk and Reduced Visibility
Weather officials have warned that temporary water accumulations are likely in flood-prone areas.
Commuters and residents should also expect significantly reduced visibility on the roads due to a combination of persistent fog and heavy showers.
Public Safety Advice
In response to the deteriorating conditions, the authorities have issued a series of safety recommendations for the public:
- Stay Sheltered: Members of the public are advised to remain indoors and avoid open plains, hiking, or venturing out to sea.
- Lightning Hazards: During thunderstorms, people are strictly cautioned against seeking shelter under trees.
- Hazardous Areas: Avoid locations known for water accumulation and exercise extreme caution while driving.
The Mauritius Meteorological Services confirmed they are monitoring the situation closely.
Residents are urged to stay informed by following subsequent weather bulletins as the system develops.
