Mauritius on Alert after 2nd Chikungunya Case Detected in Rose-Hill
Health officials in Mauritius have confirmed a second case of Chikungunya as the year draws to a close, triggering immediate containment measures in the Plaines Wilhems District. The patient, a 59-year-old woman residing in Plaisance, Rose-Hill, is currently undergoing treatment at Victoria Hospital in Candos.
While this marks the second detection in recent months, the Ministry of Health has clarified that this is presently the only active case in the country.
Immediate Containment Measures
In response to the diagnosis, health teams have initiated an extensive fumigation campaign across the Rose-Hill area. This “fogging” exercise is designed to eliminate local mosquito populations and mitigate the risk of further viral transmission within the community.
Government Coordination
The detection has prompted a high-level multi-agency response. The Ministry of Health has scheduled an emergency meeting for today, Wednesday 17 December, to coordinate a national strategy.
The summit will involve key stakeholders from several government sectors, including:
- The Ministry of Environment
- The Ministry of Tourism
- Local Government authorities
The cross-departmental talks aim to strengthen preventative measures and ensure a robust monitoring system is in place to protect both residents and the island’s vital tourism industry.
