Tassarajen Pillay Chedumbrum, the former Minister of Information and Communication Technologies, has been named the new head of the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA), immediately setting out a dual priority: to bolster national cybersecurity and tackle inequalities in the quality of services provided to Mauritian citizens.

New Leader’s Focus

The newly appointed head has declared the urgent need to update the legal framework to keep pace with the rapid evolution of technology and emerging threats.

  • Cybersecurity Overhaul: Mr. Chedumbrum stressed the necessity for legislative review to enhance public protection against online threats. “With the new threats that emerge every day, we must review our laws when necessary, in order to better protect citizens against cyberattacks,” he stated.

Addressing Connectivity Disparities

Mr. Chedumbrum also highlighted the unacceptable persistence of disparities in connectivity across Mauritius.

  • Tackling ‘Two-Tier’ Treatment: He condemned the uneven provision of service, stating, “It is unacceptable that there is a two-tier treatment. Some regions benefit from a stable network, while others still struggle to access a correct connection.”

Operator Responsibility

The ICTA President insists that telecommunications operators must play a crucial, socially responsible role that goes beyond simple profit-making.

  • Investment Mandate: Mr. Chedumbrum stressed that operators “must invest to offer a better service and guarantee an equitable quality of connection to all Mauritians.” He added, “Their mission cannot be reduced to profit.”
