4th Leptospirosis Death Confirmed in Mauritius Amid Rising Cases
A fourth person has died from leptospirosis in Mauritius, health officials confirmed on Wednesday, as the number of active cases in the country climbs to 15.
The latest fatality occurred on Tuesday, 21 April, at the Dr A.G. Jeetoo Hospital in the capital.
Dr Ashwamed Dinassing, Acting Director of Health Services at the Ministry of Health, told RadioPlus that the deceased patient suffered from underlying health conditions, or comorbidities.
Transmission and Risks
Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection transmitted through the urine of infected rats.
Authorities have highlighted that the risk of transmission increases significantly during rainy periods, particularly for those working in or visiting agricultural fields where contact with contaminated water or soil is more likely.
Public Health Advice
Medical professionals are urging the public to seek immediate medical attention at health centres if they experience symptoms including:
- High fever
- Joint pain
- Sore throat
- Persistent fatigue
The Ministry of Health has stressed the importance of transparency during medical consultations.
To ensure rapid diagnosis and effective treatment, patients are advised to inform healthcare providers of any potential contact with rats and to specify their professional activities, which may help identify occupational exposure.
