Bérenger Signals Exit: MMM Central Committee to Decide Fate of Alliance
The political landscape in Mauritius was dramatically reshaped over the weekend as Paul Bérenger, leader of the Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM), announced his personal withdrawal, placing the onus on his party’s central committee to decide the future of its participation in the governing coalition.
Bérenger’s Statement and Immediate Impact
Mr Bérenger confirmed his move in a televised interview on the national station on Saturday evening, November 15, stating:
“I am moving in the direction of withdrawing myself, and the MMM will decide on Monday what it wants to do”
His announcement immediately opens a new chapter for the MMM, known as the Mauves, by handing the central committee the responsibility of determining whether the party will remain within the Alliance du Changement (Alliance of Change) government.
Crucial Committee Meeting
The MMM has scheduled a special central committee meeting for 5 p.m. today, Monday afternoon.
This meeting is deemed decisive as it is expected to clarify the MMM’s official position within the governing alliance and will be “determining for the future”
Leaders’ Summit Preceded Announcement
Mr Bérenger’s bombshell came after a face-to-face meeting with Prime Minister Dr Navin Ramgoolam on Saturday afternoon, November 15.
The two leaders met at the Prime Minister’s residence, Riverwalk, Floréal.
Following the summit, Mr Bérenger described the exchange as taking place in a friendly setting, though he was quick to qualify that “politically it changes nothing”.
Further discussions, which had been initiated prior to the weekend, are set to continue on Monday, 17 November.
