Tragic Crash Claims Life of 'Brilliant' Teenager, 16

A family’s simple airport run turned to tragedy after a late-night car crash in Mare-d’Albert claimed the life of a “very brilliant and studious” 16-year-old girl.

The teenager, a student at the MGI, died on Saturday, November 1st, around 1 am, despite emergency surgery after the horrific incident on Thursday, October 30th, at approximately 10:30 pm. An autopsy revealed a fractured skull as the cause of death.

Crash Details and Injured Cousins

The family was returning from dropping off relatives at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport when the accident occurred.

The car, driven by the girl’s 47-year-old uncle from Camp Garreau, Centre de Flacq, violently struck a roadside electric pole after it apparently veered off course.

Police initial findings suggest the driver may have momentarily fallen asleep at the wheel. A subsequent alcohol test on the driver came back negative.

The victim, who was in the front seat, was left trapped in the wreckage. Firefighters from Rose-Belle, supervised by Station Officer Purthasee, had to cut her free before she was rushed to Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital by SAMU, under the supervision of Dr. Soobhuj.

Two younger passengers, the girl’s cousins aged 11 and 14, were also severely injured. The youngest is currently in intensive care, while the 14-year-old remains under observation at the hospital.

Tributes Pour In

The heartbroken uncle described his niece as “always applied, respectful… what happened is a true tragedy… it is unacceptable for our family.”

At the funeral, classmates and friends paid emotional tribute to a young woman remembered as “full of joy,” “ambitious,” and with a “big heart.”

One friend, who had known her since kindergarten, shared, “She loved helping others and was always motivated in life. I never expected to lose such a friend.” Her death leaves an immense void in her family and school.
