Malenn Oodiah, a sociologist and political commentator known for his passion for social initiatives and his ability to bring people together, has passed away.

Oodiah was also the former Head of Communications for the Beachcomber group, a prolific author, and a regular contributor to L’express, a local newspaper.

He was dedicated to social change and civic engagement, and his work often focused on the future of his country.

A Legacy of Activism and Reform

Oodiah’s influence extended beyond his professional roles. In 2019, he launched the Platform for a Social Project, which identified 25 key challenges for Mauritius.

He was a champion of social initiatives and believed in the “common sense of Mauritians.” He dreamed of a greener Mauritius, with a focus on planting trees.

A key part of his work was the Lakaz Flanbwayan, a space he created for both exhibitions of emerging talent and public discussions.

Oodiah’s passion for social reform was also evident in his writings. He authored several books, including the 2024 Manifeste de l’Avenir (Manifesto for the Future), a seminal document advocating for structural reforms and a renewed social pact for more inclusive governance.

His other works include Mouvement Militant Mauricien: 20 ans d’histoire, 1969-1989 (Mauritian Militant Movement: 20 Years of History, 1969-1989) and Pour une Révolution Tranquille (For a Quiet Revolution).

A Voice for Social Change

As a regular columnist for L’express, Oodiah used his platform to advocate for his ideas. In November 2022, he wrote an article titled “Autocratic Drifts. Let’s not be afraid! Let’s all fight!” in which he warned against the actions of what he called “arsonists” at all levels of society.

He stated that these individuals were “very active on social networks and in private meetings.” Though his voice is now silent, his call for vigilance remains a guiding light.

His writings also addressed technological and social issues. In May 2023, he penned an article on “Artificial intelligence and the future of work,” where he stressed the importance of ensuring that “the logic of democratic sharing prevails over that of technocratic control.”

Oodiah was also a photographer himself, with a love for both photography and nature. This passion was reflected in his 2017 book, Up Close, an elegy to photography and the natural world.
