A spill of 20 litres of heavy fuel oil was reported on July 2, near the public beach at Pointe-aux-Sables. Authorities responded swiftly, deploying teams and equipment to contain the leak. Water samples and air quality analyses are currently underway.

The source of the spill appeared to be a local manufacturing plant. The situation is now under control, according to the Ministry of the Environment.

The National Coast Guard (NCG) and the Special Marine Fire Brigade (SMF) deployed a total of 21 meters of barriers and approximately 160 absorbent pads in the affected area.

By the end of the day, workers were still on site cleaning up the mess, often doing so themselves.

The incident has raised concerns about the environmental impact of industrial activities on the nearby coastline.

An investigation into the cause of the spill is ongoing, and officials have promised to take steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

In a statement, the Ministry of the Environment emphasized that its priority is to ensure the safety of both people and the environment.

“We are working closely with local authorities and experts to contain and clean up the spill as quickly as possible,” said a spokesperson.

The public has been advised to exercise caution when visiting the affected area until further notice.

Meanwhile, local residents are urging for stricter regulations on industrial activities in their community to prevent such incidents from happening again.

As cleanup efforts continue, authorities are working to determine the full extent of the damage caused by the spill and to hold those responsible accountable.
