Health Alert: Chikungunya Surges Past 200 Cases While 2 Contract Leptospirosis Bacteria

Health authorities in Mauritius have confirmed that chikungunya infections have now surpassed 200 cases across the island, marking a significant expansion of the virus.

New clusters have been identified in several regions, including Vacoas, Glen Park, Phoenix, Tamarin, La Preneuse, and Le Morne.

Dr Fazil Khodabocus, the Acting Director of Health Services, has issued an urgent call for public vigilance as the virus continues to gain ground.

Leptospirosis Concerns

In a simultaneous health development, two new cases of leptospirosis have been recorded.

The patients, both in their sixties, include a gardener from Trèfles and a resident of Mont-Ida. Both individuals are currently hospitalised and reported to be in stable condition.

Mpox Monitoring

The Ministry of Health also provided an update on the mpox situation.

Two patients who tested positive remain under hospital care, while two others are currently in self-isolation.

Officials confirmed that contact tracing efforts are ongoing to contain any potential further spread of the virus.
