Major Road Hazard as Overgrown Hedges Block Visibility for Beau-Bassin Drivers
Neglected residential hedgerows are creating a significant road accident hazard in the Cascadelle and Mare-Gravier regions, sparking urgent calls for municipal authorities to resume strict enforcement of maintenance bylaws.
The lack of upkeep along Dr Lesur Street has led to obstructed visibility for motorists and pedestrians alike.
Concerns are mounting that a serious collision is inevitable unless local government officials intervene to ensure property owners trim encroaching vegetation.
A Growing Hazard on Key Routes
Dr Lesur Street has seen a substantial increase in traffic volume in recent months.
Motorists are increasingly using the road as an alternative route to avoid the permanent congestion on the Royal Road, a problem exacerbated by the commencement of Metro Express operations.
The danger is particularly acute following recent periods of continuous rainfall, which have caused bamboo and katamani hedges to grow unchecked.
The foliage now spills into the thoroughfare, affecting:
- Commuters: Drivers navigating high-traffic periods from morning to evening.
- Pedestrians: Local residents and joggers who frequent the area.
- Public Health: Overgrown greenery also poses risks regarding insect infestations and other pests.
A Decline in Enforcement
Local residents have noted a sharp decline in the standard of municipal oversight.
Historically, council inspectors exercised rigorous control, issuing formal warnings and fines to negligent property owners to ensure public safety and hygiene.
However, critics argue this era of accountability appears to be over. Despite the deteriorating conditions, municipal authorities have remained inactive for weeks.
Calls for Official Action
The burgeoning safety crisis has led to direct appeals for intervention from high-level officials.
Both the Mayor, Gabriella Batour, and the Minister of Environment and local Member of Parliament, Rajesh Bhagwan, are being urged to address the administrative lapse.
The community remains hopeful that the authorities will “wake up” and fulfill their duties before a preventable tragedy occurs on the streets of Beau-Bassin.
