Maritime Alert: High Seas and 50 km/h Gusts Threaten Across Coastal Areas

Authorities have advised against venturing into open water as gusts of up to 50 km/h and significant sea swells hit the region. According to the latest bulletin issued this Friday, 23 January, by the national weather station, a weather system moving in from the east is currently dictating local conditions. While the day began with partly cloudy skies, conditions are expected to deteriorate, becoming increasingly overcast with passing showers.

Regional Forecast and Rainfall

The most significant rainfall is anticipated across the eastern half of the island and over the Central Plateau.

Forecasters confirm that these showers are likely to persist through the afternoon and remain throughout the night.

Wind speeds are currently holding between 15 and 25 km/h from the north-east, though the public is warned of sudden gusts reaching 50 km/h.

Maritime Conditions

Conditions at sea remain challenging. Beyond the reefs, the water is described as “heavy,” with south-westerly swells measuring approximately 2.5 metres.

While the sea is expected to improve gradually as the day progresses, the weather station has maintained its advisory against high-sea excursions for the early part of the day.

Despite the cloud cover, temperatures remain warm across the island:

The mercury is expected to drop to its lowest points overnight, particularly in the higher elevations and along the literal.
