120 Arrests, No Justice: Cybercrime Unit Branded 'Dysfunctional' Over 3-Year Gap

Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam has disclosed the alarming fact that not a single conviction has been secured despite 837 cybercrime cases being referred to the Cybercrime Unit between January 2023 and November 2025.

The shocking revelation, made during a parliamentary session this Tuesday, November 10, in response to a question on the extent of cybercrime, immediately drew strong condemnation from opposition benches.

Dysfunction within the System

During the same period, official figures confirm that:

  • 837 cases were referred to the Cybercrime Unit.
  • 120 individuals were arrested.
  • 1,038 depositions were recorded from victims, witnesses, and suspects.

However, the Prime Minister admitted that no conviction had yet been pronounced following these arrests.

“Shocked” by System Failure

MP Stéphanie Anquetil expressed her dismay at the situation, stating she was “shocked” and denounced what she termed a serious dysfunction within the system.

In response, Prime Minister Ramgoolam conceded that the Cybercrime Unit does not function as it shouldand indicated that corrective measures may be under consideration to address the failure.
