Across 2 Days in Africa, Mauritius Officials Promote World Class Degree Programs
Mauritius has officially launched a high-profile diplomatic and educational mission across Southern Africa, signalling its intent to become the continent’s premier destination for higher learning.
The “Study in Mauritius” initiative, led by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Research in partnership with the Economic Development Board (EDB), is currently holding a series of educational fairs.
A delegation of public and private universities recently concluded a mission in Zambia (19–20 February) and is currently stationed in Zimbabwe, with events running through 24 February.
A Strategic Continental Vision
The mission is a key component of the Mauritian government’s 2025–2029 programme and is backed by the 2025–2026 budget.
By engaging directly with African students and parents through school visits and face-to-face fairs, the island nation aims to strengthen the internationalisation of its tertiary sector.
Strategically, Mauritius is positioning itself as a secure, stable, and multicultural regional hub. Officials are highlighting several key advantages to prospective applicants:
- Global Recognition: Degrees that hold international prestige.
- Diverse Curriculum: A wide range of academic disciplines and vocational paths.
- Strategic Location: A gateway between Africa and the rest of the global economy.
Financial Incentives and Scholarships
To attract top talent, the delegation confirmed that scholarships will be awarded to high-achieving students.
Central to this offer is the Mauritius-Africa Scholarship Scheme, which provides funded opportunities at local public institutions, specifically designed to ease access to higher education for students across the continent.
Establishing a Regional Hub
This expansion reflects a long-term shift in the Mauritian economy toward the service and education sectors.
By promoting its academic framework and quality of supervision, the country hopes to cement its status as a “Knowledge Hub” for the Indian Ocean and Africa.
