3 Dead in Recent Leptospirosis Outbreak as Health Officials Call for Vigilance
Three people have died in Mauritius since the start of the year following an outbreak of leptospirosis, health authorities have confirmed. A total of eight cases of the bacterial disease have been recorded since January.
Dr Fazil Khodabocus, the Acting Director of Health Services, stated that while there are currently no active cases reported, the situation remains under close surveillance by medical officials.
Risks and Symptoms
Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection typically transmitted through contact with rat urine.
Health experts warn that the disease generally presents with:
- High fever
- Muscle aches
- Severe fatigue
While the symptoms can be distressing for any patient, individuals with underlying health conditions (comorbidities) face a significantly higher risk of developing serious complications.
High-Risk Groups
The Ministry of Health has identified specific sectors of the population that are more vulnerable to exposure.
Those working in close contact with animals or soil, particularly farmers and agricultural workers, are among the most at risk.
Preventative Measures
In light of the recent fatalities, sanitary authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant.
Dr Khodabocus emphasised the importance of adhering to strict preventative measures to curb further transmission.
The public is advised to maintain high standards of hygiene and protection, particularly in environments where rodents may be present, to ensure the continued absence of active cases.
