Storm Horacio Could Form Within 48 Hours As Depression Gains Local Strength
A weather system currently designated as Tropical Depression H is expected to intensify and move towards the South-West, potentially developing into a moderate tropical storm.
Meteorological experts confirmed at 10 AM on Thursday, 19 February 2026, that numerical weather prediction models are in agreement regarding the system’s likely strengthening.
Should it reach the moderate tropical storm threshold, it will be officially named Horacio by the Mauritius Meteorological Services.
Current Position and Movement
The depression is presently located at coordinates 13.5°S 76.5°E, with an estimated central pressure of 1001 hPa. It is currently moving at a slow pace toward the South.
Forecast and Impact
While the system is projected to shift toward the South-West, it is not expected to influence the weather over the Mascarene Islands directly for at least the next two days.
Despite the general consensus among prediction models, officials have noted that there are still significant uncertainties regarding both the eventual track and the final intensity of the system.
