Mauritius Jumping 9 Spots Across 55 Global Soft Power Measures

Mauritius has surged forward on the international stage, climbing nine places in the latest Global Soft Power Index. The nation now sits at 96th position, up from 105th last year, marking a significant boost in its global visibility and reputation.

The index, which evaluates a country’s ability to influence through image, culture, and diplomacy rather than military or economic force, highlights a growing “soft power” presence for the island nation.

While the report notes that there is still a long road ahead before Mauritius can rival the world’s major powers, the jump into the top 100 represents a notable shift in its global standing.

Measuring Global Impact

The Global Soft Power Index provides a comprehensive look at how 193 nations exert influence without the use of coercion.

This year’s rankings were determined by 55 specific indicators, including:

  • Governance and Reputation: How a country is perceived by the international community.
  • Business and Trade: Economic attractiveness and the business environment.
  • Culture and Heritage: The global reach of a nation’s identity.
  • Science and Media: Impact through research, communication, and technological advancement.

The International Landscape

Despite the gains made by Mauritius, the top of the leaderboard remains dominated by traditional heavyweights.

The United States retains the first-place position, followed closely by China.

Japan, the United Kingdom, and Germany round out the top five, cementing their roles as the world’s most influential actors.

Regional Context

Within Africa, the rankings reflect a stark divide. Only Egypt, South Africa, and Morocco managed to break into the global top 50.

The majority of the continent’s other nations remain in the bottom half of the index, making the progress of Mauritius particularly noteworthy within the regional context.
