Police have apprehended a suspected illegal operator and a motorist during a targeted raid on a domestic gas decanting ring in Baie-du-Tombeau.

The operation, which took place on Wednesday, 18 February, at Résidence St-Malo, saw officers catch the pair in the middle of a dangerous “decanting” process—the illicit transfer of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from domestic cylinders into a private vehicle’s fuel tank.

The Raid and Seizures

The intervention was carried out by the Port Louis North Special Team, under the command of Sergeant Bundhooa.

Upon storming the site, officers discovered the operator actively feeding domestic gas into a car.

During the search of the premises, police seized critical evidence used in the illegal trade, including:

  • A compressor used for the pressurized transfer of gas.
  • A domestic gas cylinder.

Police Action

Both the operator and the driver of the vehicle were taken into custody immediately. The successful sting involved a team of officers, including Constables Ramjane, Caullychurn, and Roopmarain.

Under local regulations, using domestic gas—which is often subsidised—for vehicular transport is strictly prohibited due to both financial fraud and the extreme safety risks posed by unregulated high-pressure transfers.
