Police Arrest 2 Suspects After Masked Duo Steal Rs 20,000 From Gaming House
A 35-year-old repeat offender has confessed to his involvement in an armed robbery at a coastal gaming house following a rapid, coordinated police operation in the north of the island.
The suspect, described by authorities as a drug addict, admitted to the heist after being intercepted in a white Perodua in the Cité-Mère-Teresa region of Triolet.
While he remains in custody, a 47-year-old female driver detained alongside him has denied any involvement, claiming she was unaware that the vehicle’s number plates had been doctored with black adhesive tape to evade detection.
The Raid and Investigation
The incident unfolded on the evening of 14 February when two masked men, dressed in black, stormed the establishment on the Trou-aux-Biches coastal road. A 30-year-old cashier, working alone at the time, was confronted by the duo:
- One assailant used a crowbar to force entry into the cashier’s booth.
- The second, armed with an iron bar, threatened the employee to expedite the opening of the safe.
The robbers successfully made off with approximately MUR 20,000 from a red safe before fleeing in a white car toward the public beach.
Although the employee was unhurt and unable to identify the attackers, the premises’ CCTV proved vital.
Forensic Breakthrough
Detectives from the Northern Divisional Crime Intelligence Unit (DCIU) initially found that Safe City cameras near the crime scene yielded no results.
However, by cross-referencing private surveillance with the wider Safe City network, officers spotted the white Perodua.
The Police Main Command and Control Centre in Ébène tracked the vehicle as it moved toward Triolet.
Upon intercepting the car, police recovered a crowbar and a pair of shoes that matched footwear seen in the surveillance footage.
Confession and Injury
During police questioning, the 35-year-old suspect admitted to splitting the stolen MUR 20,000 with an accomplice, claiming his share had already been spent.
The interrogation took a dramatic turn when the suspect reportedly injured himself by striking his head against a metal window frame.
He was treated at SSRNH hospital before being discharged back into police custody.
The investigation remains ongoing as the Trou-aux-Biches CID and Northern DCIU seek to identify and apprehend the remaining accomplice.
