High-Ranking Police Officer Dies in 3-Vehicle Collision in Vacoas

A senior police official has died following a morning traffic collision in Vacoas on Thursday, 15 January, after reportedly suffering a medical episode at the wheel. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Soomendra Hurree, 57, was pronounced dead at the scene after his vehicle struck a parked car, triggering a chain reaction that involved a van transporting several children.

The Incident

According to initial reports, ASP Hurree is believed to have been incapacitated by a sudden medical emergency while driving.

His vehicle collided with a stationary car, which was subsequently propelled into a nearby van.

Emergency services from the SAMU (Service d’Aide Médicale Urgente) arrived shortly after the crash but were unable to revive the officer.

Casualties and Investigation

Despite the involvement of a vehicle carrying children, authorities confirmed that there were no injuries among the van’s occupants or the other drivers involved.

Key findings from the investigation include:

  • Cause of Death: An autopsy performed by Police Medical Officer Dr Ananda Sunassee determined the cause of death to be a broken neck.
  • Sobriety Tests: Breathalyser tests conducted on the other two motorists involved returned negative results.

Next Steps

Vacoas Police have scheduled a formal reconstruction of the facts for Saturday, 17 January. Both surviving motorists are expected to be present as investigators work to finalise the details of the tragic event.
