Police Officer Injured in Accidental Shooting at Line Barracks

A police officer has been hospitalised following an accidental discharge of a firearm at the Commissioner of Police’s office in Port-Louis. The incident occurred shortly before midnight on Wednesday, 7 January, at the Line Barracks. A Training Police Constable (TPC), attached to the Special Supporting Unit, was beginning his shift when the discharge took place.

The Incident

Preliminary findings from the police investigation suggest that the officer’s service weapon fired accidentally while it was still secured in a holster attached to his belt.

The constable sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg. He was immediately transported to Dr Jeetoo Hospital for emergency medical treatment.

Following his care, the officer has been prescribed two weeks of sick leave to recover from his injuries.

Investigation Underway

The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of Port-Louis South has launched a formal inquiry to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the accidental discharge.

Authorities have secured the perimeter of the Commissioner’s office to allow forensic teams and investigators to process the scene.
