Metro Express To Launch New 10 Minute Tram Frequency From 12 January

Commuters in Mauritius will see a significant increase in tram frequencies starting Monday, 12 January 2026, as Metro Express Ltd (MEL) moves to tackle rising passenger numbers and improve reliability.

In an official statement released on 7 January, MEL confirmed a new operational schedule designed to slash waiting times and streamline daily travel for workers and students across its two primary lines.

Continuous Ten-Minute Service for Line 1

The most substantial change affects Line 1, connecting Curepipe and Place d’Armes. From the coming Monday, trams will operate on a continuous ten-minute frequency between 6 am and 6 pm, Monday to Friday.

This shift marks the end of extended waiting periods previously experienced during off-peak hours, providing much-needed flexibility for those travelling between the capital and the central plateau.

Targeted Peak-Hour Support for Line 2

On Line 2, which serves the vital economic and educational hub between Rose Hill and Réduit, the operator is focusing on peak-time congestion. Trams will now run every ten minutes during the following windows:

• Morning: 7 am to 9 am
• Afternoon/Evening: 4 pm to 6 pm

Meeting Rising Demand

The service revision follows a period of increased footfall across the network.

According to MEL, the primary objective of the updated timetable is to ensure greater service regularity and a more fluid commute for the thousands of passengers who rely on the system daily.
