Residents and mariners are urged to exercise caution this December 22 as the Vacoas weather station forecasts deteriorating sea conditions and localised afternoon showers across parts of the island.

Key Weather Summary

  • Sea Conditions: Rough beyond the reefs with 2.5-metre swells; southern and western lagoons becoming “impassable” from tonight.
  • Afternoon Outlook: Localised moderate showers expected over the West and Central Plateau.
  • Temperature Highs: Peaking at 33°C in coastal areas.

Maritime Hazards

The most significant alert concerns the maritime environment. Authorities have officially advised against all excursions into the open sea due to 2.5-metre south-westerly swells.

Conditions are set to worsen by nightfall, at which point the lagoons in the south and west will become impassable.

Daily Forecast and Precipitation

While the morning began with partly cloudy skies and occasional light rain over higher ground, the atmosphere is expected to shift after midday.

Cloud development will bring localised, occasionally moderate showers to the west of the island and the Central Plateau.

Conditions are expected to improve as the evening progresses, with the sky gradually clearing to make way for a generally fair night.

Temperature and Wind

Thermometers will reflect a warm day, with coastal regions seeing highs between 30°C and 33°C, while the heights will remain cooler at 25°C to 28°C.

Overnight, temperatures will dip to a minimum of 19°C on the Central Plateau and 23°C along the coast.

An easterly wind will persist throughout the day, blowing at a light to moderate speed of 10 to 20 km/h.
