The dog trainer has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty following a joint intervention by the Mauritius Society for Animal Welfare (MSAW) and local police.

Christopher Sakir, 31-year-old, a resident of Route Jardin, was detained after video evidence emerged allegedly showing him brutally handling several dogs under his care.

While initially released on parole following an interrogation, Sakir was required to return to Flacq police station on December 19 to face a provisional charge in court.

The Investigation

The investigation was triggered on 18 December at approximately 1:15 pm, when an anonymous complainant approached the MSAW with incriminating video footage.

Upon reviewing the evidence, an MSAW official conducted an immediate site visit to the trainer’s premises. During the inspection, authorities discovered several dogs of various breeds kept in kennels at the complex.

Police Intervention

Once the animal welfare infractions were identified, the Divisional Support Unit took Sakir into custody. The suspect was transported to the Flacq police station for formal questioning before the legal proceedings commenced.

Note: This case follows a coordinated effort between animal welfare authorities and the police to address reports of mistreatment within the local training community.
