Brazilian Arrested at SSR Airport Following Rs 14.5 Million Suspected Cocaine Seizure

A 30-year-old Brazilian man has been taken into custody at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) International Airport after customs officials discovered suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of Rs 14,550,000.

The suspect, identified as Robson Brito Dos Santos, was intercepted on Friday, 19 December, by officers from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Section (CANS).

The seizure occurred shortly after his arrival on South African Airways flight SA 190, which originated in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with a layover in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Operation

Following his arrival, Dos Santos was initially subjected to a body search. However, the illicit substance was discovered during a subsequent examination of his hand luggage.

Authorities confirmed the bag contained:

  • Quantity: 0.79 kg of white powder.
  • Suspected substance: Cocaine.
  • Estimated value: Rs 14,550,000.

Next Steps

The white powder has been seized for further testing to confirm the nature of the substance. Under Mauritian law, the suspect remains in custody as investigations into the transit route and intended destination of the narcotics continue.
