India to Fund New 2025 Start for Stalled SSR International Control Tower
The long-dormant construction of the new control tower at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International (SSRIA) is set to resume following a strategic intervention by the Indian government.
The project, a critical component for the airport’s future development and airspace safety, has been at a standstill since July 2020. Work originally ceased after the initial contractor was placed under administration, leaving the vital infrastructure incomplete for over five years.
Bilateral Cooperation
The breakthrough follows a high-level delegation of Indian officials who conducted a site inspection of the construction works on Wednesday, 17 December.
According to a statement released by Airports of Mauritius Co. Ltd (AML), the resumption is being made possible through a combination of technical and financial backing from New Delhi.
This partnership marks a tangible outcome of the diplomatic ties strengthened during Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam’s visit to India in September.
During those talks, the Indian government pledged support for several of Mauritius’s priority infrastructure projects.
Enhancing Aviation Safety
The site visit allowed officials to assess the current state of the works and outline the remaining phases required to bring the tower into operation.
Lormus Bundhoo, CEO of AML, described the revival of the project as a “decisive step” for the airport’s evolution.
Once completed, the modern facility is expected to:
- Enhance air traffic safety through updated technology.
- Improve operational efficiency at the international hub.
- Support the long-term growth of the Mauritian aviation sector.
The new control tower is positioned as a cornerstone of the airport’s modernization strategy, ensuring SSRIA meets international standards for efficiency and safety in the years to come.
