Urgent Drain Finish Set for January 2026 Deadline; Rs249 Million Budget Approved
Port-Louis, 15 December 2025 — The Minister of Public Infrastructure, Ajay Gunness, has issued an urgent directive to local authorities across the nation, demanding the immediate acceleration of drain and river cleaning operations to prevent flooding ahead of the looming rainy season.
In a sharp statement made on Monday at a coordination meeting in Port-Louis, Minister Gunness insisted that these critical cleaning works must be completed before the end of January 2026.
Cash Disbursed, Delays Flagged
The ultimatum comes despite the Ministry of Finance already having approved the disbursement of Rs 249 million to the 12 local authorities following an initial meeting in September.
This funding was specifically allocated to finance, among other things, the vital drain and river cleaning operations.
However, the Minister expressed significant frustration, noting that delays have been raised within several municipalities and district councils.
“There is urgency and I hope that every municipality and district council will take their responsibilities and act accordingly. Millions have been disbursed,” he stressed.
Tender Process and Safety Concerns
Speaking to representatives from municipal and district councils, the Land Drainage Authority, and other stakeholders, Mr. Gunness emphasised the pressing need to launch tenders immediately to prevent further hold-ups.
The Minister took a forceful stance on accountability, stating, “We are all moving in the same direction and we do not want loss of life.
We want to get through this rainy period in the best conditions.” He has also demanded weekly reports on the progress of the works.
The coordination meeting, held at the Port-Louis Municipal Council, was convened to assess the advancement of the cleaning works, particularly against the backdrop of recent episodes of heavy rainfall.
Prioritising Flood-Prone Areas
The attendees also discussed the difficulties encountered by authorities in executing these projects. Authorities have identified and prioritised the most exposed areas following recent severe weather events.
