New MAPFRE-GFA Partnership Elevates Travel Insurance for Mauritian Tourists

As the appetite for international travel continues to grow among Mauritians, the need for comprehensive travel insurance has never been greater. In a significant move to address this demand, global insurance leader MAPFRE, operating through its digital assistance brand MAWDY (MAPFRE Worldwide Digital Assistance), and its local partner, GFA Insurance, have announced a strengthened exclusive partnership. This collaboration is set to provide Mauritian travellers with innovative protection, merging global expertise with exceptional value.

The announcement was made during a masterclass on the travel insurance ecosystem, led by Mr. Ismael Nekoussou Traore, an International Reinsurance Expert specially dispatched from MAPFRE’s headquarters in Madrid.

MAPFRE, a Spanish multinational and a global leader in insurance with a presence in over 100 countries, brings decades of experience in global claims management and traveller assistance.

When questioned on the strategic relationship, Mr. Traore was unequivocal: “GFA is our sole and exclusive partner in Mauritius, and will be for the long term.”

This statement reinforces MAPFRE’s long-standing commitment to the Mauritian market and its confidence in GFA Insurance as its representative of choice.

Here are the key benefits travellers can now expect from this enhanced partnership:

1. Breakthrough Age Inclusion: Coverage Extended to Travellers Over 80

In a market first, the GFA-MAPFRE partnership removes a significant barrier for senior travellers.

Unlike many insurers that impose strict age limits, this policy guarantees coverage for individuals over 80, ensuring that entire families, whether visiting relatives or touring abroad, can travel with peace of mind.

2. 24/7 Digital Healthcare: A Doctor on Call in 30 Minutes

The partnership introduces a groundbreaking telemedicine service. Imagine falling ill with a high fever or infection while abroad. Instead of navigating an unfamiliar healthcare system, a single call to the assistance centre connects you with a doctor for a video consultation within 30 minutes.

For minor conditions, the doctor can issue an electronic prescription, allowing you to collect medication from a local pharmacy or have it delivered directly to your hotel, eliminating stress and saving valuable time.

3. Comprehensive Protection for the Most Common—and Costly—Travel Disruptions

The data is clear: 55% of travel insurance claims are for medical expenses. A simple hospitalisation in Europe can lead to bills amounting to hundreds of thousands of rupees.

This insurance is designed to cover these real-world risks, protecting policyholders from unforeseen financial burdens due to non-chronic health issues or accidents.

The policy also provides extensive cover for baggage loss, flight delays or cancellations, and repatriation in the event of a death.

The enthusiasm is equally high on the Mauritian side. Mr. Abdel Ruhomutally, Managing Director of GFA Insurance, stated:

Our goal is straightforward: to make reliable and straightforward travel protection a natural reflex for Mauritians, as essential as booking a flight. With MAPFRE, we are already developing new products to push the boundaries even further.”
