The Mauritius Post is grappling with a significant financial crisis, recording a deficit of approximately Rs 85 million last year, ICT Minister Avinash Ramtohul has revealed.

Describing the current state of the national postal service as “worrying,” the Minister attributed the substantial losses to past mismanagement.

He confirmed that the government is now implementing targeted strategies to reorganise the institution and reverse its downward financial trajectory.

A Roadmap for Recovery

The Minister disclosed these figures yesterday during a strategic workshop held at Hennessy Park in Ébène.

The event focused on developing a new roadmap and strategy for postal services across Mauritius.

To address the ongoing losses, the government’s plan involves:

  • Institutional Reorganisation: A complete overhaul of internal management to rectify past errors.
  • Strategic Realignment: New operational frameworks to stabilise the budget.

Digitalisation as the Future

A key pillar of the proposed recovery is the acceleration of digital integration. Mr Ramtohul emphasised that the digitalisation of postal services must be strengthened to better meet public needs.

By enhancing digital capabilities, the Minister aims to align the Mauritius Post with broader government strategy, ensuring the service remains relevant and efficient in an increasingly digital landscape.
