The Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Avinash Ramtohul, has made an urgent appeal for increased parental supervision following the suicide of a 17-year-old girl, reportedly distraught after intimate photos were shared on social media.

The Minister confirmed his awareness of the tragic case and revealed he had met with the victim’s parents at the funeral on October 28.

Minister Ramtohul made the comments on Tuesday Afternoon, 29th October, while speaking at the launch of a new book on Artificial Intelligence (AI).

He explicitly called on parents “to fully assume their responsibilities and better supervise their children.”

The Minister also stated that his ministry is working alongside the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare and the Information and Communication Authority (ICTA) to develop strategies and measures aimed at preventing similar future tragedies.

The 17-year-old took her own life by hanging at her home on Saturday, October 25.

Family members indicated she was deeply distressed after the dissemination of her intimate pictures online.

Her former boyfriend is currently suspected of being responsible for the act.

The family, said to be “in shock,” is demanding justice.
