The Speaker of Australia’s House of Representatives, the Honourable Milton Dick, made an historic visit to Mauritius on 25 September, marking the first time a bipartisan parliamentary delegation led by an Australian Speaker has travelled to the island nation.

Mr Dick paid a courtesy visit to the Prime Minister, Dr. Navin Ramgoolam, accompanied by a diverse delegation of Australian parliamentarians. The discussions between the dignitaries centred on strengthening the parliamentary relations between Mauritius and Australia.

The Speaker emphasised that the visit reflects a desire to consolidate the links between the two countries, acknowledging the presence of thousands of Mauritians living in Australia. In a move to formalise this commitment, he announced the forthcoming creation of a parliamentary friendship group between Mauritius and Australia.

Delegation Details and Further Engagements

The accompanying Australian delegation included members from the government, the opposition, and independent senators. Among them were Senators Claire Chandler, Dorinda Cox, Deborah O’Neil, and Tammy Tyrrell, as well as the Honourable Mary Doyle.

In a separate engagement, Prime Minister Ramgoolam also received Professor Tarun Khaitan, a public law specialist from the London School of Economics, who is in Mauritius to deliver a series of lectures at the University of Mauritius.
