Mauritius has been crowned Africa’s most innovative nation for 2025, leading the continent in a new report by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The island nation, which secured a global rank of 53rd, was lauded for its strong institutions, robust education system, and pro-investment policies. Following closely behind were Morocco and South Africa, ranking 57th and 61st globally, respectively.

African Innovation Leaders

The report, titled “Global Innovation Index 2025: Innovation at a Crossroads,” analyses the innovation performance of 139 countries using 80 indicators across seven key pillars, including human capital, infrastructure, and research.

According to the findings, Morocco’s rise to its highest-ever ranking was a direct result of its consistent investment in renewable energy, industrialisation, and digitalisation.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s enduring strength as a regional powerhouse is attributed to its top-tier universities and a thriving research and development ecosystem.

Broader Continental Trends

While no African nation cracked the global top 50, the report highlighted several positive trends across the continent.

Senegal, ranked 89th, was celebrated as an “outperformer” for its vibrant startup ecosystem and rising venture capital.

Namibia also saw significant progress, reaching 91st place with new investments in education and institutional reforms. Seychelles (75th) and Tunisia (76th) maintained their positions, driven by the digitalisation of public services and a dynamic tech sector, respectively.

The report also noted the strong performance of Egypt (86th), solidifying its status as a North African digital hub, and Botswana (87th), which continues to leverage its stable governance and financial sectors.

Cape Verde (95th) was buoyed by a surge in mobile services and government initiatives supporting tech entrepreneurship.

The upward mobility of economies like Morocco, Senegal, and Namibia indicates a growing diversity of innovation drivers across the continent.

Globally, Switzerland, Sweden, and the United States topped the rankings, reaffirming their status as the world’s most innovative economies.

The report was released on Tuesday by WIPO, with the full text attributed to Samira Njoya.
