Police have launched an investigation after €520 in counterfeit euro notes were discovered at a hotel in the East of the island. The forged currency, which included a €500 bill, was found by staff at the reception desk on two separate occasions in August. The case has now been handed over to the CID of Trou d’Eau Douce.

The first incident occurred on Monday, 4 August 2025, at around 8 p.m. when an employee found a counterfeit €20 note during the end-of-day cash count.

The note was handed to management, who promptly filed a police report.

The investigation took on new urgency on Sunday, 24 August, at approximately 11 a.m., when further forged bills totaling €500 were found at the reception desk.

Although the hotel has surveillance cameras, investigators have been unable to identify who deposited the bills, as hundreds of transactions are processed daily.

The counterfeit money has been sealed and sent for analysis to trace its origin.
