Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam has sought support from Japan for Mauritius’s energy sector during his official visit to Yokohama. During high-level discussions with his Japanese counterpart, Shigeru Ishiba, Dr. Ramgoolam requested assistance with the installation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) turbines through a “Government-to-Government Agreement.”

The Mauritian leader began his official engagements on Wednesday, August 20, by expressing profound gratitude for Japan’s continuous support across various key developmental sectors.

He specifically highlighted a previous meeting with former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the 2013 Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 5), which led to Japan providing Mauritius with its first Doppler radar.

In addition to the energy appeal, the two leaders discussed enhancing cooperation on maritime security, with a focus on monitoring Mauritius’s exclusive economic zone.

Discussions also progressed towards finalising a crucial “Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement” (IPPA) to bolster the nation’s economy.
