Just a day before the 2014 dissolution of Parliament, the former government allegedly made a series of last-minute recruitments at Mauritius Duty Free Paradise (MDFP).

This astonishing revelation came from Prime Minister  Dr Navin Ramgoolam in parliament.

One Day Before Parliament

Responding to a question from Labour MP Roshan Jhummun, he stated that 115 employees were onboarded at MDFP on September 2, 2024 — only one day before Parliament was dissolved and just two months ahead of the upcoming general elections.

The Prime Minister criticised these hires, saying they were made outside normal procedures. He pointed out that the employees were engaged on trial contracts of only six months — a clear violation of union rules, which require a minimum probation period of twelve months.

The revelation has sparked widespread concern about transparency and fairness in government employment practices.

Critics argue that the last-minute hiring spree may have been politically motivated, raising questions about the integrity of the process and whether it was intended to sway the upcoming elections.
